>> 40-year-old alex ulrich was killed and his friend larry peterson was injured. an arrest has been made. >> reporter: this is 25-year-old quniton bass. police said he pulled the trigger killing alex ulrich and injuring larry peterson, just steps away from the belvidere hotel. >> we think it's significant, this case. it highlights how all the different components of the police department work together with the community in solveling case -- solving cases. >> reporter: as the homicide detectives were building the case, it was officers on foot patrol who broke it. bass and others were drinking in a mt. vernon park. the foot officers approached him and took him.
investigators worked backward, ccting him to the shooting three months earlier. >> the motive is robbery and it still remains an active investigation. >> reporter: active because there was at left another person with bass that night and they want to find her. police also say bass is from north carolina. he ended up in baltimore this year, living in homeless shelters and all the while building an unknown record of violence and robbery that now spans two states. he's now locked up on a slew of charges. chief among them, murder in the first. in mt. vernon, prien kuebler, abc2 news. >> prien tells us police are still looking for bass' accomplice and still need you. if you can remember anything call the homicide direct at 410-396-2100. there's another family that needs your help. he was a father, coach and
friend and murdered over the weekend. he was buried today but the family is still looking for answers about what happened. >> on saturday 38-year-old fred king dropped his son off at a barber shop and said he would be right back. later sat dray night he was found shot several times in the 2600 block of kemp street. the engin was running and the door was open. police have few clues. the family made a big plea for people to come forward. they say the man who they affectionately called big fred was a friend to everybody. >> he just wanted to see his daughter go to georgetown or go to college and you will fill the dream of playing -- and fulfill the dream of playing basketball. if you saw anything last saturday night, please call in
the information. he was a good dude, man. >> reporter: if you have any information that can help police crack this case, call metro crime stoppers at 1-866-7-lockup. >> a second deputy died last night after having a hark. sergeant ian loughran starting having pains. the gunman in the perry hall high school appeared in court. he is on a suicide watch at the detention center. the state apparently hasn't provided his attorneys with the mental evaluation. outside the courthouse he said
gladden has expressed sorrow for the actions. >> i'm in the positive exactly what his motivation; and i don't think he's positive of what his motivation s i think you're dealing with a child who was motivated they commit suicide by cop. what he was dog was being -- doing was acting out in a terrible fashions in the hope that someone would pull the trigger on him. >> the attorney has requested that the judge transfer him tooff nile court. two incidents involving a dunn in baltimore county schools. the new superintendent, dallas dance is starting a dialogue with parents. it will be open to you the public, so the remaining meetings will take place
september 20th, 23rd and 1st of october. for more information, just check the local news tab and click on baltimore county. >> baltimore county schools did confirm that a rumor was going around at ken wood high school that someone was going to bring a gun to school. they believe it started threw text messages. the school policy is that schools get locked down. officials said the school was not locked downoday. classes were back in session at morgan state. a 19-year-old, who was not a student, was shot in the stomach in the school's student center. the victim was visiting his cousin who is a student. the gunman was not a student. the students headed to class

in tonight's consumer alerted, the coin shaped button batteries used in your remotes to watches is getting a safety make overafter -- after the cdc said it was being swallowed by kids. the company said the new packaging will be harder for children to open and will have new warnings on the labels. whether this will prevent kids from swailing them a study found that only 8% of kids who eat the batteries actually get them from the packets. mcdonalds is rolling out the new menus with the calorie counts. one mcdonald's owner said he's getting positive feedback about the positive changes, including an app the company just rolled

stepped foot on the moon. >> he passed away and thousands attended the memorial. >> reporter: the words have been etched into our collective memory. >> it's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. >> reporter: 40 years later, thousands who were inspired by those words took a small sad step for the memorial honoring neil armstrong. one came from dallas to be here. he worked with armstrong at the kennedy space center. >> knowing he could die at any moment. we're going to go for it no matter what. >> reporter: kim sullivan came
from sterling, virginia, to show his respects for a man who he had something in common. >> the first eagle scout to walk on the moon. i have two sons who are eagle scouts. he was a role model to many young men, still a role model. >> reporter: the national cathedral is special to armstrong. he donated a moon rock to the church. it is still displayed today. the last man to step on the mon and armstrong's friend spoke at service. >> and as you soar through the heavens, beyond where even eagles dare to go, you can now finally put out your hand and touch the face of god. farewell, my friend. you have left us far too soon.
